Medical services and clinics
Below are the services and clinics available in your area.
Cervical smears
All women aged 25-64 are advised to have regular smear tests. (Every 3 – 5 years depending on age.) These can be booked with the practice nurse or with a doctor during routine surgeries. The National Screening Programme have a computerised recall system and all patients eligible will receive regular reminders/invitations to attend for cervical smears.
If you have been invited for screening, or have been for screening and have any questions about the result, you should contact the name and address shown on your invitation letter or result letter. If you are worried about a specific problem, or otherwise worried about the risks of cancer, then you should talk to your GP.

I think I am pregnant
Confirm your pregnancy by carrying out a pregnancy test which can be purchased at many local supermarkets and chemists. You can carry out a pregnancy test from the first day of a missed period. Tests that are done earlier than this may not be accurate.
If the test is positive, this means you are pregnant. All pregnancy tests, when carried out correctly and at the right time, are reliable. This includes tests that you buy from the pharmacy or supermarket to do yourself. If you don't have regular periods, and the test is negative, you should repeat the test at least three weeks (21 days) from the last time that you had unprotected sex.
If the result is positive and you wish to continue with the pregnancy you should contact the Midwife Service at Cossham Hospital by visiting the NBT maternity website www.nbt.nhs.uk/anb. Usually, your booking appointment would be when you are between 8-11 weeks pregnant. Alternatively, you can book by calling and leaving a message on 0117 4146743.
The Midwife team work with the doctors to provide care and advice to all pregnant women. They are available to give advice on your options for antenatal care, where you can give birth (including at home) and how best to look after yourself and your partner when trying for a baby and during pregnancy. Our midwifery service is provided by North Bristol NHS Trust and is based at Cossham Hospital. You may also be seen at one of the community clinics provided at Fishponds Primary Care Centre.
The midwives run antenatal clinics, birth preparation classes, and a home birth support group with other local midwives.
If you do not wish to continue with your pregnancy please book an appointment to see one of the doctors who can then guide you through the options that are available for you.
Asthma Clinic
Asthma clinics are held regularly at the practice. Asthmatics on medication should have regular assessments in order to monitor their progress and adjust treatment accordingly. Newly diagnosed asthmatics may need support and information on the condition as well as advice and instruction on inhaler technique and these patients will be referred to the asthma clinic by their doctor.
Most asthmatics learn to control and monitor their symptoms. Guidelines and devices to do this will be provided in the clinic together with booklets and advice about recognising problems.
